Connections to Chapters
The main focus within chapter 3 is skills, therefore, the leader's capabilities. Before this reading many people may have been confused about the difference between leadership traits and skills. In chapter two, the traits outlined the personality characteristics. In chapter four, we will see emphasis on behaviour of the leader. As a result, in chapter three we are able to see the leader's capabilities discussed in detail and how these capabilities will be used along with the traits, styles, and other concepts/ideas discussed in our future readings to make a strong leader. It is important to note just because the leader has strong capabilities does not mean their behaviour or personality characteristics are also strong, possibly resulting in a weaker leader. By understanding the Skill Approach it will allow us to continue to learn about what it means to be a strong leader. Moving forward we need to take what we have learnt so far in our discussions around leadership traits and skills; it will be these models that will help us continue to grow as a leader and improve leadership in our workplaces.
