We begin this journey by digging into the theories of Katz, the concept of the Three Skill Approach, the approach that set the stage for looking at leaders as people with skills

Then we move to the next point of the map, the Skills model created by Mumford and colleagues. The model looked to understand the relationship between a leader’s knowledge and skills and the leaders performance. They focused on competencies, individual attributes, leadership outcomes, career experiences and environmental influences

- Competencies : problem solving skills, social judgement skills, and knowledge
- Individual Attributes : general cognitive ability, crystallized cognitive ability, motivation, and personality
- Leadership Outcomes : effective problem solving and performance
- Career Experiences : impacts the characteristics and competencies of a leader
- Environmental Influences : factors that are outside of leaders competencies, characteristics and experiences
- The Skills Approach works to provide a structure for understanding what effective leadership is, Katz looks at understanding where leaders are in management positions and Mumford et al looks at the index of effective leadership
